How do you choose and use essential oils

First of all, you need to know the difference between essential oil and fragrance oil. Essential oils are distilled, expressed or sometimes both are highly concentrated. Fragrance oils known as aroma oils are blended synthetic aroma compounds or diluted natural essential oils.

Few tips for choosing good essential oil:

1. Always check for the Latin name on the bottle. High-quality essential oils list the Latin name of the plant species they’re derived from. For example, a bottle of lavender essential oil could be distilled from Lavandula Angustifolia, or English Lavender. If an oil doesn’t list the Latin name, it’s hard to know exactly what you’re really getting.

2. Don't let the "Grade" of the oil fool you. Many oils are labelled as “Therapeutic Grade.” But it’s important to note that this isn’t a term that’s regulated by the FDA, or any other evaluating body. So while many reputable companies label their oils as “therapeutic grade” to denote purity, any company can put that on a bottle of oil without having to meet any specific standards of quality.

Choosing Essential Oil

The essential oil that you choose will depend on the purpose—do you want it to help elevate your mood or do you want to calm it down after a long day at work. For example, while the essential oils of lavender, chamomile, basil, Frankincense, are generally found to have a calming effect and may help with anxiety and bergamot and peppermint oil are stimulating and can help those with depression.

Calming - Lavender (probably the best known calming essential oil), Chamomile, Frankincense, Bergamot, Ylang-ylang

Energetic - Cinnamon, eucalyptus, frankincense,(citrus scent can boost alertness)

Boost Immune - Eucalyptus, Lemon, Rosemary, Tea tree Clove bud

Meditation - Sandalwood, Patchouli, Vetiver, (we highly recommend when doing yoga)

How to use essential oils:

Main 2 ways are to apply to the skin, inhaled

Apply to skin or hair

When using essential oils for your skin or hair, always dilute them with a carrier oil such as fractioned coconut, sweet almond, grapeseed, and olive oils. Then massage them into your skin. Some say "carrier oils are to carry essential oils into your skin"

Add Essential Oils To Your Body Wash & Hair Products. No matter how short your shower, you're going to use soap. That's why putting essential oils in body wash and other shower products can be so effective. We recommend diluting your natural essential oils at a ratio of 3% to 5% for topical application.

Inhaled

The easiest way is to open the bottle and inhale a few times, don`t let undiluted essential oil touch your skin. Other methods are with a bowl of hot water and a towel, place the bowl on a table and add a few drops of essential oil. Deeply inhale the steam for several minutes. Repeat a few times throughout the day.

Another great method is to use ultrasonic diffusers, drop 3-5 drops off essential oils per water tank, and always follow manufacturer instructions.

You can also take your essential oils to shower or bath, and add 3-5 drops into the bath while running taps.

When you’re dispensing essential oils in the air, consider pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, or pets in your environment. Some essential oils can be dangerous.
